The NHS MenB vaccine helps protect against meningococcal group B bacteria, which can cause serious illnesses including meningitis, sepsis and septicaemia. At Binfield Village Pharmacy, we can help eligible young people access the NHS MenB vaccination programme and provide clear guidance on booking and aftercare.

Protecting against meningitis and sepsis with the NHS MenB vaccine

Meningococcal group B bacteria can cause serious infections that develop quickly. The MenB vaccine is part of the NHS routine childhood vaccination programme and is also available through a time-limited NHS programme for eligible young people.

Who can get the NHS MenB vaccine?

The NHS MenB vaccine is routinely offered to children at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 1 year old. Children who have missed a dose can usually still have the vaccine up to the age of 2 through their GP surgery.

Until March 2027, the NHS is also offering MenB vaccination to certain eligible young people. This includes those born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, and people born on or after 21 July 2001 who are starting university or an eligible residential further-education setting for the first time in autumn 2026.

For the young people’s programme, first doses are available until 31 December 2026 and second doses are available until 31 March 2027. Two doses are important for protection.

What to expect at your appointment

Your appointment is designed to be simple and supportive. Our team will confirm your eligibility, administer the vaccine safely and explain any aftercare advice. If you are booking for a child, their GP surgery will usually arrange their routine vaccination appointments.

Common side effects

Like all vaccines, the MenB vaccine can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common effects include soreness or swelling where the injection was given, a high temperature, tiredness, irritability, reduced appetite or diarrhoea. These usually improve within 1 or 2 days.

How to book

Eligible young people can book a MenB vaccine appointment online through the NHS or use the NHS pharmacy finder to locate a participating service. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, speak to our pharmacy team for guidance.

Important information

The MenB vaccine protects against most types of meningococcal group B bacteria in the UK, but it does not protect against every cause of meningitis or sepsis. Seek urgent medical help if you are worried about symptoms of meningitis or sepsis.
